So… When was the last time you got the family together for a portrait? If its been more than a couple years, its probably time to bite the bullet, get everyone together, get stressed over what to wear and just get it done. But its really not all that bad I promise!! Except the shopping part, I hate to shop so I can offer very little comfort when it comes to that!
So you want to book a family portrait session…
But you aren’t exactly sure what the process is, or (if you have never done this before) even how it works….
So, I will start with the actual family portrait session itself. Typically a session lasts for an hour and includes a max of 5 people. Sometimes the session takes less time if everyone is cooperative, sometimes a hair longer if we have some grumpy kids… or grumpy kids that in turn make some grumpy adults!
Firstly you will want to think about what kind of photos you do want of your family. Do you want something more formal and in a studio setting, or perhaps something more casual and fun outside in a park, field or near the beach?
Is this something you want to get dressed up for, or is your family more casual and prefers jeans? For me all of this is great and whatever works for you works for me. The goal is to capture your family’s image in a way that works for you, and in a way that you wish to showcase these photographs in your home or on line. Our goal here is always for you to fall in love with your photographs so the more communication, the better.
Ok, we kind of have an idea of what we want, so whats next?
So, the next phase of the process is basically just to determine a time and a place. If you do opt for studio portraits, the timing is more flexible as all the lighting I need is right there with me. If you decide you would rather have portraits taken at a location outside, we will be limited to certain times of day typically mornings and late afternoons at what we like to call “the golden hour”, which is an hour before sunset and after sunrise. This also explains why not many people opt for a morning session!! But hey, I am game if you are, morning light is gorgeous!!!
Once a date and time is selected you will need to secure your booking with a non-refundable booking fee and the return of your portrait photography agreement. Dates are not considered “booked and locked in” until this happens.
Well, our session is all booked… what do we wear??
So what I like to tell people is to find a color palette that works for you and have everyone wear coordinating colors, but is not “matchy matchy”… And since this is stupidly vague I created a pin board of examples here. Click that link and take a look, it should give you some excellent ideas that you can incorporate into something that will work for you!
Can we bring or include our family pet into the session?
100% yes! Please do. It wouldn’t really be a family portrait without them now would it!?
Our photo session is over… now what happens???
Once your session is completed, the processing of your images will begin. This can take anywhere from one to two weeks, depending on how many sessions there are ahead of yours. We usually like to get them done sooner but will always use that as a guideline.
The processing of your images includes, color correction, teeth whitening, eye brightening and skin smoothing if needed.
Once the processing has been completed, your images will be placed into a watermarked on line gallery for you to review and make your purchases. It is important to note that due to the custom nature of the product and the speed with which they are received by the lab, all sales are final. So make your choices carefully the gallery will be up for a while and you can always add on to your order, so if you are on the fence about an image… you can always order it later.
